DPI Peacetable: The Role of Business in Conflict Resolution: The Northern Irish Experience, 30 April 2025

On 30 April 2025, the Democratic Progress Institute (DPI), in collaboration with the Diyarbakır Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DTSO), held an event in Diyarbakır as part of its ongoing Mapping Dividends of Peace in Türkiye series. The event, titled The Role of Business in Conflict Resolution: The Northern Irish Experience, explored the complex interconnections between conflict, peace, and the economy, and aimed to strengthen the economic case for peace in Türkiye and the wider region.
The event was opened by DTSO President Mehmet Kaya, who emphasised that the Kurdish issue and the conflict cannot be resolved without economic development and recovery in the region. Gerry Horkan, former Senator of Ireland, then delivered a presentation on the role of business in supporting conflict resolution and sustainable economic growth. He highlighted the mutually reinforcing relationship between peace and economic prosperity and underlined the ability of business actors to exert constructive pressure on decision-makers and political leaders to encourage dialogue.
We would like to thank all participants for their attendance and for their thoughtful contributions. The discussions and recommendations emerging from the event constitute a valuable resource for businesses, civil society organisations, and other stakeholders committed to advancing conflict resolution efforts.
We also extend our sincere thanks to the Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy of Ireland in Ankara, Ronan Cunniffe, for his participation and continued support. We are grateful to DTSO President Mehmet Kaya and to Gerry Horkan for their contributions to the event.
This event forms part of a broader series of activities under the project Supporting the Pro-Peace Agenda in Türkiye and the Region, supported by the Norwegian, Irish, and Swiss governments.
