How can societies move from armed conflict towards lasting peace? This primer by the Democratic Progress Institute explores the role of Disarmament, Demobilisation and Reintegration (DDR) in supporting peaceful transitions, drawing on international experiences from Colombia, Nepal, Liberia and Northern Ireland. It examines the political, legal, security and social dimensions of DDR, highlighting the importance of inclusive approaches, credible guarantees, effective institutions and long-term reintegration. With lessons for policymakers and practitioners, the publication offers a practical framework for understanding how DDR can build trust, support democratic participation and contribute to sustainable peace in Türkiye.
