In Dublin, DPI met with journalist and TV presenter Nagehan Alçı to explore Turkey’s current political and media landscape. Alçı shared her expert perspective on the deteriorating state of press freedom, rising polarisation, and shifting political alliances in advance of the 2023 elections. She underscored how the closure cases against Kurdish political parties and the government’s alignment with nationalist forces have damaged the prospects for reconciliation. Despite these challenges, Alçı argued that the media still holds potential to promote dialogue, provided journalists can share comparative lessons from international peace processes.
