Article by Yıldıray Oğur on Karar: “If Social Media Existed, There Would Be No Good Friday”

In his Karar column on 10 November 2025, journalist Yıldıray Oğur reflected on how today’s communication environment affects peace processes. He observed that the emotional intensity and polarising nature of social media make reconciliation and peacebuilding efforts more challenging than in the past.

Oğur also referred to our recent event titled “The Importance of Language and the Role of the Media in Peace Processes,” organised in Istanbul on 8 November 2025, in cooperation with the Diyarbakır Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DTSO). At the event, journalists Brian Rowan and Owen Bowcott shared their experiences from the Northern Ireland peace process. Drawing on these examples, Oğur underscored the crucial role that language—used by both leaders and the media—plays in sustaining peace.
