On 8 November 2025, the Democratic Progress Institute (DPI), in collaboration with the Diyarbakır Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DTSO), organised a meeting in Istanbul titled “The Importance of Language and the Role of Media in Peace Processes.” The event brought together journalists from across Türkiye, representatives of media associations, academics, and political party representatives to explore how language and media narratives can influence public perception and contribute to dialogue and reconciliation.
The meeting opened with welcoming remarks by DPI Chief Executive Officer Kerim Yıldız and DTSO President Mehmet Kaya. Yıldız emphasised the power of language and the concepts used by the media in shaping attitudes during peace processes. Kaya highlighted the importance of constructive language and focusing on the dividends of peace as a means to strengthen public support for reconciliation.
Keynote speakers Brian Rowan, journalist, author and former BBC correspondent in Belfast, and Owen Bowcott, journalist and former Guardian Ireland and Legal Affairs correspondent, drew on their extensive experience covering Northern Ireland’s peace process. Rowan reflected on the journalist’s role in distinguishing reality from political spin and building trust through credibility and balance, while Bowcott discussed the ethical challenges of reporting in a divided society and the importance of neutral, precise language to promote understanding and prevent harm.
Participants engaged in open discussions on lessons that could be drawn from international experiences for the Turkish context. They underlined that empathy, accuracy and inclusive communication are essential for responsible journalism, strengthening public trust and supporting sustainable peace.
