In her column, she discusses how women played a pivotal role in achieving peace in Northern Ireland, focusing on Jane Morrice—former BBC reporter and co-founder of the Northern Ireland Women’s Coalition. Alçı recounts Morrice’s journey from journalism to politics, the emotional public response to Gordon Wilson’s forgiveness after his daughter’s death in an IRA bombing, and how the European Union helped reframe peace efforts by supporting grassroots, women-led initiatives. She highlights how a diverse group of women, despite differing ideologies, united to form a political coalition that gained a seat at the peace talks, ultimately contributing to the Good Friday Agreement. The article also touches on symbolic interpretations of the agreement’s timing and naming.
