DPI’s forthcoming roundtable event will take place at Galatasaray University in Istanbul on Saturday 28th April 2012. Participants will include journalists, academics and civil society representatives. Panel speakers will include Don Macintyre of The Independent newspaper in the United Kingdom; Dr. Peter Busch of King’s College London; and Prof. Dr. Yasemin İnceoğlu of Galatasaray University. The visit will form part of DPI’s Turkey programme, which has included a number of Comparative Study visits to the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland.

The roundtable, entitled ‘The Role of Media in Conflict’, will aim to examine the role of media in conflict resolution, and will focus in particular on the subject of media and conflict resolution in the context of international experiences. It is expected that subjects including the language of the media; the role of the media in preparing the public for peace and the challenges of the media will all be discussed.

Previous DPI activities in this series have taken place over the  last year, with participants visiting London, Belfast, Dublin and Edinburgh, and taking part in roundtable discussions on diverse subjects including conflict resolution, constitutional arrangements, devolution, and language and identity rights. The response of these activities has been highly positive, with extensive media coverage and a continuation of discussion occurring as a result.

DPI Comparative Studies planned for this year will take place in Wales and South Africa. Future studies are intended to take place in other relevant parts of the world.

Records of all of DPI’s Comparative Studies visits have been published and are available via DPI’s website: For a hard copy of these publications or for any further information please contact Eleanor Johnson at
